Mega-Quake Setup Near Los Angeles

A Thousand Years of Pressure — All at Once

Scientists at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa published new research in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth showing that stress on the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems in Southern California is now at its highest point in 1,000 years. In some sections, it has already surpassed that mark. Burkhard described it as an “earthquake gate” — a point that can either stop a rupture from spreading between the two faults or let it pass through and combine both into one giant event.
