(ImpactHeadlines.com) – The fallout from President Joe Biden’s abysmal performance at the first presidential debate with former President Donald Trump continues to wreak havoc for the Democrats’ 2024 campaign – and rumor has it that they’re still on the lookout for a new candidate. And that’s in spite of the repeated and insistent claims by President Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, that he is remaining in the race.
While former President Barack Obama, rumored Biden replacement Gretchen Whitmer, and even California Governor Gavin Newsom have all publicly endorsed the president remaining in the race, major American news outlets don’t seem to agree. Even the left-leaning New York Times has published op-eds by Democrat-backing writers about why the president should drop out of the race, and CNN pundits have done the same.
Top House Democrats have joined the calls, too. According to reports this week, at least four House Democratic committee leaders expressed their concerns to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday, stating that they believe President Joe Biden doesn’t have a chance at beating former President Donald Trump and that he should drop out of the race.
One senior Democratic lawmaker who spoke to Axios on the condition of anonymity said that “people are upset and think he’s got to step down.”
On Monday, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington publicly called on the president to withdraw from the race, making him the most high-profile Democratic legislator to make the call.
Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, Smith said that it was clear that Biden is “not the best person” to carry his party’s message in the 2024 presidential election, adding that the party has a strong record and message to run on. Smith was confirmed to be one of the four senior House Democrats to have made the plea to Jeffriers on the Sunday call.
But President Joe Biden has responded yet again, standing firm against House Democrats on Monday and insisting that he won’t be dropping out. In an open letter sent to legislators, designed to quell talk about him potentially leaving the race, Biden said that his party has just “one job” in November – to beat former President Donald Trump. After the letter was published, Biden did see a substantial rush of support from high-profile Democrats, but that hasn’t quelled dissent among the party and the media. The tide has turned against the president that even his former press secretary Jen Psaki has admitted his flaws, publicly stating that Biden’s much-publicized ABC interview was “just OK” and even casting doubts about the president’s health.
It doesn’t sound good, does it?
