(ImpactHeadlines.com) – Steve Bannon, a close ally of Donald Trump, began serving his four-month prison sentence on July 1s after reporting to a federal institution in Danbury, Connecticut.
Bannon’s sentence begins two years after he was convicted in contempt of Congress. He allegedly refused two subpoenas issued by the House Committee during a Congressional investigation regarding messages between him and former president Donald Trump just after the presidential elections in 2020.
Bannon was originally issued the four-month sentence in October 2022. He was the first person to face incarceration for the charge in over fifty years using a statute that rarely leads to prosecution. He was also ordered to pay a $6,500 fine for refusing the subpoena issued over the ongoing case into January 6th, 2021. Both of his charges are considered misdemeanors.
Prosecutors were seeking a six-month sentence and a $200,000 fine, the maximum possible for the charges he faced. They claimed that he showed a “total disregard…for the law.” He thought he would be vindicated after Republicans reclaimed the House, but that did not happen.
Bannon and his legal team spent the following years attempting to file appeals to have his conviction overturned. It even reached the US Supreme Court, but the justices rejected his case. The committee was investigating Bannon’s alleged role in pressuring then-vice president Mike Pence and other Republican representatives into overturning the results of the 2020 elections. They claim he predicted the chaos that ensued on January 6th the day before.
Bannon previously served as a Chief White House Strategist and Senior Counselor to Trump during his presidency. He was among many Republicans who questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential elections and even said that Democrats won’t have a chance in 2024 unless “they’re stealing it.” He also said that he’s “proud” to serve a prison sentence if that’s what it takes to stand against tyranny. He also said that Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Merrick Garland made him a “martyr.”
