Trump Doubles Down on Three Big Exceptions

(ImpactHeadlines.com) – Presidential candidate Donald Trump is holding fast to his stance against an abortion ban at the federal level.

The former president reiterated his view that Roe v. Wade was specifically overturned to support states’ rights, not to support a national ban. He also credited his Supreme Court justice appointments for overturning the controversial legislation that permitted abortion nationally 51 years after it passed.

Trump also claimed that the goal has always been to return the issue to the states per the 10th Amendment rather than replace Roe v. Wade with a national ban. He acknowledged that states are voting on it differently, with some setting strict rules or removing them entirely while others consider various aspects of abortion.

Trump stressed that he believes there should be three exceptions to abortion bans on any level, saying they should still be allowed in cases related to rape, incest, or emergencies that may threaten the mother’s life. He credited Ronald Reagan for expressing those same beliefs, which numerous Republicans have repeated over the years. Despite his stance, Trump has referred to himself as “the most pro-life president” in our country’s history.

However, he’s still quick to weigh in on abortion laws at the state level. Trump recently slammed the reversal of a 2022 ban on abortion in the state of Arizona, calling it “extreme.” The law prohibited abortions for fetuses over 15 weeks old.

Trump’s views don’t entirely align with the Republican party despite his previous claims. The party’s official platform specifically calls for a Constitutional amendment that clearly sets 14th Amendment protections for unborn babies. They also called for an end to taxpayer-funded abortions and specifically called on governments of all levels to stop funding Planned Parenthood.

Several other pro-life groups, including the National Right to Life Committee, are calling for a hard ban on abortion at the federal level, as are their supporters.

Trump’s statements came as a disappointment to conservatives, but it seems to have done little to drive away support from the core base for his 2024 presidential campaign.
