(ImpactHeadlines.com) – Two attorneys general of the United States submitted court filings on June 3rd requesting to participate in arguments that support the dismissal of charges against former president Donald Trump over his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Michael Mukasey and Edwin Meese III, who each served respectively as the 81st and 75th US attorneys general, wrote in their filing submitted to the Southern District of Florida’s West Palm Beach Division that they want to speak in the defense of Trump during his defense trial scheduled for June 21st. Their goal is to have the indictment dismissed over the “unlawful appointment and funding of Special Counsel Jack Smith.”
However, they may never get a chance to testify as the case has been delayed indefinitely. Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, cited problems in the prosecutor’s case that could eventually lead to the case being dismissed. She also said that she has a backlog of pretrial cases on her agenda that take priority. She is unlikely to schedule a hearing before the end of July, when the timeline from her May 2nd order expires.
Their filings come just one week after a jury in Manhattan found Trump guilty on 34 charges related to falsified business records. The sentencing has been scheduled for July 11th, but Trump’s legal team promised to appeal the decision if necessary. He has consistently maintained that he is innocent and the charges are nothing more than a political witch hunt. He could face a sentence lasting up to 136 years, but legal analysts believe he will likely avoid jail time.
Still, if the case does go to trial, Meese wants to discuss the precedent of the DOJ authorizing independent counsel and how Smith’s position deviates from it. Mukasey believes Merrick Garland, the current US Attorney General under the Biden administration, did not have the power to appoint Smith as the case’s special counsel.
Both men were discussed by Trump’s legal team during arguments before the Supreme Court.
