(ImpactHeadlines.com) – The national leadership of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) withdrew their conditional endorsement of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) on Wednesday night.
In the statement announcing the decision to withdraw its endorsement, the national leadership of the DSA implied that the socialist group had withdrawn its support because of her position on matters pertaining to Israel and Palestine. Ocasio-Cortez was singled out in the statement for her actions around a House resolution that characterized the denial of Israel’s right to exist as antisemitism, as well as her recent appearance on a panel discussing the topic.
The DSA also had issues with AOC’s votes, including one in favor of H.Res.888, conflating opposition to Israel’s right to exist with antisemitism. They also took issue with a news release she co-signed in April that supports strengthening the Iron Dome and other defense systems.
This led the DSA to announce that it would be rescinding the endorsement it had given to Ocasio-Cortez in June, which it had provided under the conditions that she publicly opposed any aid to Israel, would be a part of the DSA committee, would oppose the criminalization of any anti-Zionism, and would back initiatives to end Israel settler-colonialism.
With a national DSA endorsement, the group vowed to remain committed to the Palestine solidarity movement and its shared socialist cause. They said that they need to be more demanding of socialist movement leaders if they want to create a movement strong enough to challenge capitalism.
In 2018, Ocasio-Cortez and her colleague, “Squad” member Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, became the first female members of the DSA to be elected to Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez has called on President Joe Biden to put pressure on Israel to reach a lasting truce with Hamas, and she has been outspoken in her criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel.
However, other factions that saw themselves as fundamental to her ascent to power, like the Justice Democrats, have also sent signals that the Bronx bartender has forgotten their founding principles in her pursuit of political power.
As of this writing, AOC has not commented on the DSA’s decision to stop supporting her candidacy. However, the New York City chapter of the DSA continues to sponsor Ocasio-Cortez, and her name remains on the organization’s website.
SAOC i’s expected to win the general election by a landslide after winning the 2024 Democratic primary with an overwhelming majority of 82.1%.
