In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about safety in Chicago, a member of the Texas Democratic Delegation fell victim to an armed robbery in the early hours of Wednesday. The robbery occurred around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of West Randolph Street, in the heart of downtown Chicago.

According to police reports, the 25-year-old victim was approached by two armed men wearing ski masks who emerged from a black Range Rover. The suspects, described as Black males dressed in black and standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, stole the victim’s wallet and room key before fleeing the scene.

Pattern of Robberies During DNC Week

The incident was not isolated. Chicago police issued a community alert about several armed robberies targeting DNC attendees between Monday and Wednesday, from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. The robberies took place in Chicago’s Loop, Fulton Market, and Armour Square neighborhoods, with the offenders using a dark-colored Range Rover Discovery and threatening victims with a gun.

“It was really unfortunate,” a Texas delegate, Angel Carroll, said. “It doesn’t change my views of Chicago. [It’s] just as a reminder to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings.”

Despite the crimes, some delegates expressed feeling safe due to the visible police presence. However, the incidents have reignited concerns about Chicago’s persistent crime problem.

Chicago’s Ongoing Struggle with Crime

During the first three days of the Democratic National Convention, the Chicago Police Department reported 22 shootings and six homicides. “Our officers are out there. They’re out there. They’re highly visible,” Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said. “And we have officers not only along the corridors downtown, in and around the venues of the Democratic National Convention, but also in our neighborhoods to continue to protect our people who are living in areas that are the most vulnerable.”
