(ImpactHeadlines.com) – Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio, the 2016 presidential candidate who went up against Trump and eventually became a contender in his 2024 veepstakes, has come out in support of the former president over his support of Taiwan. Speaking to reporters, Rubio suggested that the United States is likely to continue its support for Taiwan if Trump re-enters the White House in January next year.
The news comes after the former president made comments in an interview in June but published this week about Taiwan’s expectations from the United States. Trump argued during the interview that Taiwan should be financially responsible for any direct support or defense provided by the United States government and military.
When speaking to reporters during the recent Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Rubio described China as an “existential threat” to the Pacific Island.
Specifically, Rubio said that while he “can’t speak” for the future administration, he doesn’t have any “worries” about the U.S. revoking its support for Taiwan or helping protect against a potential invasion from China.
Rubio’s words carry weight, too. As. As one of the two most senior Republican voices on foreign policy and currently sitting on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio’s comments could offer a look into the policy of a future Trump administration. Rubio is also likely to be a member of Trump’s cabinet should he return to the White House.
While it’s not clear whether Rubio’s comments were endorsed or encouraged by the former president, the fact that he made the claim to reporters indicates that Trump’s support for Taiwan remains unchanged, even if he believes that Taiwan should be forced to pay for the United States support.
During Trump’s time in office, support for Taiwan remained stable – and that support for the independently governed and democratic island has remained throughout the Biden administration. With tensions remaining high between the United States and Russia, however – combined with Russia’s close relations with China – there’s a chance that an invasion of Taiwan is incoming and could be dependent on the level of commitment the United States provides to the island in the coming years.
